| "HE'S GOT A
GUN!" Imagine those words in your workplace. It is a chilling thought that all too often can become a paralyzing reality. Whether the violence results during the commission of a crime, is caused by a disgruntled or deranged present or former employee, or is perpetrated as a result of domestic discord or abuse, "at work" has become a more dangerous place.
Acts of physical violence are not the only cause of workplace crisis. Acts of terrorism, natural disasters, sexual harassment, corporate restructuring, and serious or fatal accidents, as well as violence, cause trauma and dislocation. These crises are called critical incidents. Critical incidents -- single events with the power to cause unusual psychological distress in healthy normal people -- are on the rise. Although their human toll is incalculable, they cost the economy $4 billion+ a year. Think about it...how long would it take for your organization to recover from a workplace crisis? What would disruption mean to your organization...what would it mean to the people you employ and the people you serve? Now, think again: The odds are that within the next 3 years, if your company has not already experienced a crisis or critical incident in the workplace...you will. Are you and your people prepared to handle crisis in the workplace?
